Descendants of Thomas Loveday (ca. 1671-1733) of Islip, Northamptonshire
About this data
Scions of a Loveday family were situated in Islip, Northamptonshire for more than two centuries, where the family members' chief occupation was as makers of mats, baskets, horse collars and other items from the rushes of the river Nene. This genealogy follows the surname from its oldest known Islip inhabitant. Further research may yield more generations; one Thomas Loveday appears as a burgess for Brackley Corporation in the visitation of Northamptonshire, 1618-19, and the name has connections back to Norman times.
Baptism, marriage and burial dates are from Islip parish records (see source citations), consulted on microfiche, unless otherwise noted. Likewise, Islip is the birth, marriage and burial place, as well as the stated origin of spouses, unless otherwise noted. The parish records provide almost exactly the information listed here, except in the case of marriages, where witnesses are also listed. Civil registrations, once begun in 1837, were recorded in nearby Thrapston, should you wish to obtain a copy of a certificate for further study. Stated locations are in Northamptonshire unless noted.
This page (last updated 20 Apr 2008) follows the Register System and treats only descendants with the Loveday surname. I may expand other lines in the future, so feel free to share any information you might have on Loveday descendants. This is a collaborative work and would not be possible without the help of many contributors, and I have tried to list these in the sources section. If you have questions, additions or corrections, please contact Wes Biggs. You may use this data freely, though it is both kind and useful to include a note regarding your sources.
Following the descendant register proper, there is a section on other Lovedays who are possibly related, but have not been placed into any of the families listed above. Perhaps your relative is here, waiting for a connection to be made.

A George Loveday, who was buried 19 Nov 1830, aged about 8 years, is unaccounted for and may belong to the family of William and Mary.
15. Joseph5
Loveday (William4,
Joseph3, Thomas2-1) was baptized 9
Jul 1797 in Islip (though he was conveniently 49 in the 1851
census) and was a mat maker in Titchmarsh and Ketton. More details are needed to fully understand Joseph's
marriages and children, so the summary below should be taken as
work in progress. It seems he married (1) Sarah Lee, 3 Jun 1819 in
Woodford; she was buried in Islip 5 Feb 1821, age 28; (2) by 1826,
but likely earlier, Mary Ann &mdash, born in Thornaugh or
Harringworth about 1798. [13] shows a marriage to Hannah Lock on
15 Jul 1839, but this does not seem to be confirmed by the census
records; there is also a marriage in Aldwincle All Saints, 25 Dec
1827, between Joseph Loveday and Dinah Bland; a Dinah Loveday was
buried in Islip, 6 Jan 1839, age 32. Disregarding those leads
(which perhaps refer to a different Joseph?) and
focusing on census records for Joseph and Mary: The family moved from Titchmarsh in 1841 to
Ketton in 1851, and remaining there. In 1881, Joseph was once again widowed, residing in the Geeston Brewery Tap in Ketton[8].

| | iv. | Stephen, bapt. 16 Mar 1828, probably d. young (perhaps the Stephen buried in Islip, 31 Mar 1832, ae. 2 1/2 years, though the math does not quite work out) |

The 1871 census records Hannah Loveday, sister of Frederick Loveday, age 59. This would leave some strange gaps between children, and another hypothesis is that she was a sister-in-law instead. She was buried 10 Feb 1873, age 60.
17. John5 Loveday (William4, Joseph3, Thomas2-1) was baptized 11 Jul 1802 and worked as a mat maker and railway porter. He married, in Sudborough, Mary (or perhaps May[10]) How, 9 Dec 1824[18], born in Sudborough about 1800 (employed as a cook at age 50 in 1851). She died 22 Oct 1874 and was buried 25 Oct 1874 in Islip, and he died in the Thrapston Union Workhouse and was buried in Islip, 25 Oct 1876, aged 76 (73, headstone).

Gray, age 5, born in the East Indies, is listed as their niece. Charles was buried in Islip, 18 May 1894, ae. 54[27]. |
| | viii. | Elizabeth, bapt. 14 Aug 1842 |
| 34. | ix. | Frederick, bapt. 16 Feb 1845 |
| | x. | Ellen, b. 1850[10], perhaps the Ellen in Wellingborough as a dressmaker in 1871. |
18. Isaac5 Loveday (William4, Joseph3, Thomas2-1) was baptized 10 Mar 1805. He married (1) 19 Apr 1824, Susannah Stratton, likely the Susan that was buried 12 Jul 1832 at age 33, (2) in Norwich, Norfolk, before 1851, Hannah Yeomans, born in Desborough. Isaac, a mat maker, died in 1853[1].
